Something has changed, and you deserve real answers

Maybe it started with sleep. You wake at 3 a.m., wide awake, for no reason you can name. Then your periods began to wander, your patience got shorter, the word you wanted went missing mid-sentence, and your body started keeping weight in places it never used to. Many women hear that their symptoms are just part of getting older, and that’s hard to hear when you don’t feel like yourself.

It makes sense that you’re frustrated. These changes are real, they’re common, and they are physiology we can work with. Perimenopause and menopause touch almost every system in your body, from your brain’s thermostat to your bones, heart and bladder, which is why the experience can feel so scattered.

Think of your symptoms as your body’s check-engine light. The light is telling you something important, but it can’t tell you what’s wrong under the hood. For that, you need to plug in the diagnostic tool. That’s where we start: we listen to the whole story, then look for the reasons behind it. Start with the full picture.

How our menopause clinic in Aurora works

Menopause care at Thrive! is physician-led from the first visit, and it is built around you rather than a one-size-fits-all script.

Complimentary Personalized Discovery Call. A conversation with our team about what’s going on and what you hope to change. Book a complimentary Personalized Discovery Call

Physician consultation. A detailed visit about your symptoms, cycle history, health and family history, medications and goals, in person in Aurora or by secure video anywhere in Ontario.

Comprehensive testing. Blood work, plus at-home metabolite testing where it adds insight (more on that below).

Your written, personalized plan. Hormone, non-hormone and lifestyle options, chosen together, with the reasons for each one explained in plain language.

Follow-up through the year. Check-ins to fine-tune your plan and recheck labs, most often through our annual Personalized Hormone Program™ for Women.

Thrive! is private-pay and does not bill OHIP. Before testing, we tell you which lab tests carry a fee. Our hormone and menopause care is complementary, functional medicine care, which is uninsured. It works alongside your family doctor or nurse practitioner and doesn’t replace them, so we encourage you to keep them.

Why we don’t stop at symptoms

Symptoms tell us something is changing, but they don’t tell us why. Perimenopause is recognized from your symptoms, cycle and age, and testing fills in the rest of the picture: it helps rule out look-alike causes such as thyroid or iron problems, sets a baseline before any treatment, and lets us personalize your care. We review your results with you in the context of your symptoms, history and goals.

A lab’s “normal” range describes where most people in a reference group land. It doesn’t tell us where you feel and function best, and it doesn’t flag the slow drifts that matter most in midlife. In our practice, we often see two changes travel together in the years after menopause: blood sugar starts to creep up and LDL cholesterol rises, often before either one is flagged “high.” Catching that pattern early is exactly why we test.

The research points the same way. In the long-running SWAN study of women through midlife, frequent and persistent hot flashes were linked with a higher risk of heart disease events years later, and women with signs of insulin resistance in midlife tended to have more hot flashes. Hot flashes, in other words, can be a message about more than temperature.

Our comprehensive panel looks at:

Hormones: estrone, estradiol and estriol, progesterone, LH, FSH, bioavailable testosterone, DHT, DHEA-S, sex hormone-binding globulin, prolactin and 8 a.m. cortisol

Thyroid: TSH, free T3, free T4, reverse T3 and thyroid antibodies

Metabolism: fasting glucose, hemoglobin A1C and fasting insulin

Heart and blood vessels: a lipid panel plus apolipoprotein A1 and B, lipoprotein(a) and homocysteine

Inflammation: high-sensitivity CRP and ESR

Nutrients: vitamin D, B12, folate, ferritin, iron and TIBC, magnesium, zinc, calcium and the omega-3 index

Overall health: a complete blood count, electrolytes, liver and kidney function, and uric acid

Alongside your blood work and symptoms, an at-home metabolite test shows how your body makes and processes hormones. It gives your physician more insight for personalizing your care, and it can be particularly useful in more complex cases. See everything we offer on our personalized testing page.

What your care options can include

Every plan is different, because every woman is different. Depending on your assessment, your options may include:

Hormone therapy. For healthy women under 60, or within 10 years of menopause, with no reason to avoid it, the balance of benefits and risks of hormone therapy is generally favourable for treating bothersome hot flashes and preventing bone loss, and The Menopause Society describes it as the most effective treatment for hot flashes and night sweats. We prescribe Health Canada-approved hormone products, and where needed (for example, when a dose needs adjusting, an ingredient causes an allergy or side effect, or for another medical reason), we work with properly vetted compounding pharmacies to prepare a personalized medication. Compounded preparations are not Health Canada-approved products, and your physician explains why one is recommended. Read hormone therapy risks and benefits.

Non-hormone prescriptions. If hormones aren’t right for you, other medicines can ease hot flashes, including fezolinetant, a non-hormonal prescription authorized by Health Canada.

Testosterone, when it fits. Testosterone is a women’s hormone too. After a full assessment, testosterone may be considered for some women, for example when low libido is a concern. No testosterone product is currently approved by Health Canada for use in women. Canadian menopause guidelines describe transdermal testosterone as an off-label option for some menopausal women after a full assessment. Learn more about testosterone for women.

Vaginal and bladder care. Low-dose vaginal estrogen, pelvic floor exercises and our B-Pulse chair. See bladder leaks after menopause.

The foundations. Strength training to protect muscle and bone, sleep support, nutrition, and cognitive behavioural therapy, which has evidence for making hot flashes less bothersome and improving sleep.

FAQ

What type of doctor can help with menopause?

A family physician with menopause training can assess your symptoms and plan your care. At Thrive!, Amber Bocknek, MD, CCFP, ABAARM, FAAMM, MSCP, is a family physician and Menopause Society Certified Practitioner, and Liesbet Jansen, MD, CCFP, also sees hormone patients. Your first visit covers your symptoms, cycle and health history, and the testing that will personalize your plan.

How can a doctor tell if you are in menopause?

Assessment starts with your symptoms, cycle history and age. Menopause is confirmed after 12 months in a row without a period. Hormone levels swing during perimenopause, so no single blood test confirms it, but testing still matters: it rules out look-alike causes such as thyroid or iron problems and sets a baseline before treatment. Talk with your physician about which tests fit your situation.

What are the symptoms of menopause?

Common symptoms include hot flashes, night sweats, poor sleep, changing periods, mood changes, brain fog, joint aches, vaginal dryness, bladder changes and lower libido. Experiences vary a lot from person to person: some women have a few mild symptoms, others have many that affect work and relationships. See our full guide to perimenopause symptoms in women.

How long does menopause last?

Menopause itself is a single point in time: 12 months after your final period. The transition before it, perimenopause, often lasts several years, and symptoms can continue afterward. How long symptoms last varies widely from person to person. Keeping a record of your symptoms over time helps your physician plan care.

Can I see a menopause doctor online in Ontario?

Yes. Thrive! offers virtual menopause care to adults anywhere in Ontario by secure video. Have your symptoms, medications and questions ready. Blood work can be drawn first thing in the morning at any LifeLabs or Dynacare near you, after fasting for at least 10 hours. If you prefer to meet in person, our clinic is at 15017 Yonge Street, Suite 105, in Aurora.
